Lawrie Minson

A Tamworth local, Lawrie’s father John “Mr Hoedown” Minson pioneered country music on radio in Australia as well as co-founding the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Lawrie is a journeyman session musician and has played in the Lee Kernaghan band.

Lawrie has been to India and has a deep affection for the people. Lawrie has seen Tamworth grow from a small idea to one of the top ten festivals in the world. He got to produce Bobby’s first album.

Directed by Colin Bromley

MAIN CAST

Bobby Cash – Bal Kishore Das Loiwal

India’s only country music artist. In his early forties, he makes a living playing to international audiences in New Delhi at five star hotels, restaurants, consular and corporate functions. He supports a family in Dehradun in the foothills of the Himalayas who run a school and hostel for underprivileged children.

A devout Christian he says he has a gift from god and it is his mission to share it.

His dream is to get acceptance for his music and the Tamworth Country Music Festival in Australia seems the perfect place to find it

Manish Gunthey

Bobby’s “RHM”- right hand man. Manish works in Indian Television but is an avid fan of Bobby’s. He calls Bobby his guru and is a keen student of the guitar. Manish is Bobby’s confidante and assistant, mixing the sound at live performances. He is desperately wanting Bobby to get the recognition he deserves.

Smoky Dawson

Legendary pioneer of country music in Australia. Born in very poor circumstances Smoky achieved international success in the US and UK in the 50’s. He returned to Australia and became the biggest selling artist of his time. Smoky appeared in films, television, radio and even had his own comic book. Aged 90 at the time of filming he was still performing to large and loyal audiences. Smoky personally knew many of the original artists that Bobby plays, and is totally taken aback that an artist from India can sound so genuine.

Roy Eykamp

Eighty-five years old, Roy emigrated from the US in the early 60’s. A mechanical engineer by trade Roy had made his fortune pioneering the production of Kikuyu seed. He developed not only the technique for growing Kikuyu grass to encourage seed production but also invented the equipment needed to harvest it. Roy went on to have a worldwide monopoly on Kikuyu seed.

Roy saw a current affairs story about Bobby and decided to help him. Roy’s aunt had run a missionary school for underprivileged girls in India in the 30’s and 40’s and Roy wanted whatever success Bobby achieved, to go towards helping in the same way his aunt had.

The Baileys

A local Tamworth family band of teenagers whose parents are from India. Playing lively bluegrass music they are just starting to achieve some success nationally. They accept Bobby into their home and share a meal and the stage with Bobby.
